Civil Justice Researcher Position description: The RAND Institute for Civil Justice (ICJ) is looking for researchers at all levels of experience who can support, expand, and extend our research agenda on civil justice, business, and the law. Overview of the RAND Institute for Civil Justice The RAND Institute for Civil Justice is an independent research unit within the RAND Corporation. For more than 25 years, the ICJ has pursued the mission of helping to make the civil justice system more efficient and more equitable, by supplying government, private decision-makers and the public with the results of objective, empirically-based, analytic research. The ICJ facilitates change in the civil justice system by analyzing trends and outcomes, identifying and evaluating policy options, and bringing together representatives of different interests to debate alternative solutions to policy problems. The Institute builds on a long tradition of RAND research characterized by an interdisciplinary, empirical approach to public policy issues and rigorous standards of quality, objectivity, and independence. In recent years, the scope of ICJ research has grown broader, through the establishment of research centers dedicated to issues in terrorism liability and risk management (CTRMP), small business and entrepreneurship (the Kauffman Center), workplace health and safety (CHSW), and corporate ethics and governance (LRN-RAND). Candidates for a Civil Justice Researcher position at RAND will help the ICJ to strengthen its portfolio in one or more of the following research areas:
Administration of justice
Alternative dispute resolution
Class action lawsuits and mass litigation
Corporate ethics, law and governance
Intellectual property
Insurance and risk management
Juries and verdicts
Labor and employment law
Law and health
Workers' compensation
Qualifications: PhD in a relevant field such as psychology, political science or economics, or JD (with evidence of experience in empirical legal studies). Applications from persons with joint degrees in law and social science (JD/PhD) are particularly encouraged. All research positions at RAND require excellent analytic skills; the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; the ability to work well as a member of a multidisciplinary team; and a strong commitment to RAND's core values of quality and objectivity. Applicants should have demonstrated quantitative, qualitative and/or legal research skills, as well as expertise in a policy-related topic among those listed above. For applicants seeking senior-level civil justice researcher positions, prior years of experience in relevant scholarly and professional settings and in leading team-based research projects will be considered. Additional qualifications for senior-level hires include a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, demonstrated ability to secure external funding, and demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships.
